Prices are the US list or regular price shown on each manufacturer’s site on October 21, 2026. Where a page showed a temporary sale, we recorded the regular price. Our buying guides cover cheaper brackets too: power racks under $500, rowing machines under $500, walking pads under $200 and adjustable dumbbells.
Home gym vs gym membership
To compare, we divided each build total by two monthly membership prices: the $65 US average for 2023 reported by the Health & Fitness Association and the $15 Planet Fitness Classic price for new members reported by CNBC.
| Build | Total | Equals at $65/mo | Equals at $15/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | $479 | 7.4 months | 31.9 months |
| Barbell basics | $1,074.96 | 16.5 months | 71.7 months |
| Full garage gym | $3,144.94 | 48.4 months | 209.7 months |
This is simple division, not a forecast: it leaves out membership sign-up and annual fees, equipment shipping and tax, resale value, and the time you spend driving to a gym. Run your own numbers with our free home gym cost calculator.
How we built this
- Equipment prices: we opened each manufacturer’s US product page on October 21, 2026 and recorded the list or regular price shown, not a coupon or limited sale. The source link sits beside every price.
- Plate totals: REP sells bumper plates in pairs. The 160 lb total is the 10, 25 and 45 lb pairs; the 260 lb total is the 10, 15, 25, 35 and 45 lb pairs, each at its listed pair price.
- Builds: each build is an example, not a recommendation for everyone. We picked well-known products from our own guides and from manufacturers that publish prices directly.
- Membership costs: taken from the Health & Fitness Association’s October 2024 release (2023 average dues) and CNBC’s May 2024 report on Planet Fitness pricing. We did not run a survey and did not estimate any figure ourselves.
- Not included: shipping, sales tax, flooring, collars and accessories, and resale value.
- Dates: prices move, so treat every figure as of October 21, 2026, the date we checked.
