The best weighted vest for most people is an adjustable one in the 20 to 40 lb range with small removable weights, because you can start at 5% of your body weight for walking and work up to 10% or more for rucking, pull-ups and push-ups without buying a second vest. If you only walk, a light fixed-weight vest of 8 to 12 lb is cheaper and sits closer to the body; if you do Murph or CrossFit workouts, a plate carrier with a pair of plates is the standard. This guide compares and ranks eight weighted vests on weight range, how the weight adjusts, fit, bulk and price, using the makers’ own specifications and retailer listings read on October 18, 2026.

Our pick is the RUNmax Pro Weighted Vest: sold in 12, 20, 40, 50 and 60 lb versions with removable weight packets, so one vest covers walking now and heavy calisthenics later. For walking and bone health, the fitted Empower 8 lb vest is the women’s favorite; for running, the thin Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO (sold at hyperwear.com) moves with you; for Murph, the 5.11 TacTec Plate Carrier plus two plates.

Our pick

RUNmax Pro Weighted Vest: best weighted vest overall (12 to 60 lb, adjustable)

The RUNmax Pro is the vest that grows with you. It comes in 12, 20, 40, 50 and 60 lb versions, each filled with removable iron-sand weight packets split between front and back pockets, so a 40 lb vest can be worn at 10 lb for a walk on Monday and loaded for weighted pull-ups on Wednesday. The listing offers it with or without shoulder pads; the padded version is the one to get if you plan to carry 30 lb or more. It fastens with wide hook-and-loop straps, fits one size, and the maker says the weights are upgradable if you outgrow your version. It is bulkier than a running vest and the packets shift a little when you jog, which is the trade for the price and the range. Pick the 20 lb if you mostly walk and do bodyweight work; the 40 lb if pull-ups, dips and rucking are the goal.

1. RUNmax Pro Weighted Vest: best overall

See our pick above. Two notes from owner reviews: the vest runs large on small frames, so cinch the side straps fully before you load it, and the iron-sand packets will sag toward the bottom of their pockets if you leave a pocket half full, so fill pockets evenly front and back. The 60 lb version is heavy enough for weighted dips and squats; most people never need more than the 40.

2. Empower Weighted Vest for Women, 8 lb: best for walking and women

Empower makes the vest you see on most morning walks: a fitted female cut that sits on the torso rather than hanging from the shoulders, a single adjustable belt, and reflective trim for early walks. The classic version is a fixed 8 lb; Empower also sells 4-10 lb and 10-16 lb adjustable versions built from 1 lb pouches, which are the better buy if you want to follow the 5% to 10% progression below. At 8 lb it is about 5% of a 160 lb body, which is where the research on vests and bone density in postmenopausal women started (see the FAQ). It is too light for pull-ups or rucking; that is not what it is for.

3. Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO: best weighted vest for running

Running in a vest is a different problem from walking in one: anything that bounces chafes your collarbones within a mile. The Hyper Vest PRO solves it with a patented stretch compression fabric, side lacing you tighten to your chest, and steel micro-weights (2.25 oz each, 0.25 in thick) spread over the whole torso, so the vest is barely thicker than a jacket. It is sold at 10, 15 or 20 lb and sized S to XL; the size sets the maximum load (S 20 lb, M 25 lb, L 30 lb, XL 40 lb) and Hyperwear sells 5 lb booster boxes to fill it. The fabric is washable and made in the USA. It is the most expensive vest here, which is the price of the only vest in this list you can run in.

4. 5.11 TacTec Plate Carrier: best plate carrier for Murph and CrossFit

The TacTec is the plate carrier most CrossFit gyms use for Murph: 500D nylon, padded yoke shoulder straps, perforated mesh and front and back padded panels with airflow channels, a skeletonized stretch waistband and a quick-release cable. It fits sizes S-XL and takes medium or large plates. The carrier itself weighs about 2.5 lb and ships without plates, so the math for the Murph standard is two 8.75 lb plates for 20 lb (men) and two 5.75 lb plates for 14 lb (women); 5.11 sells both in pairs (style 56782 for the 5.75 lb pair), and Rogue’s and Yes4All’s cast plates fit too. It often goes on sale at 511tactical.com. The carrier sits high on the chest and does not take small weight increments, so for daily walks the vests above are more comfortable.

5. ZELUS Weighted Vest: best budget weighted vest

The ZELUS is the cheapest way to try vest walking: neoprene fabric, iron-sand fill, a reflective stripe and a zip pocket for a phone, sold as fixed 6, 8, 12, 16, 20, 25 or 30 lb vests. Fixed weight is the catch: pick the weight you want to walk at six months from now, not today, since you cannot remove any. The 12 lb is the sweet spot for a 150 to 200 lb walker; the 20 lb and up are for bodyweight training. Owner reviews praise the price and the fit for the money and note the straps wear before the fabric does.

6. Kensui EZ-VEST: best for heavy calisthenics

If you already own Olympic plates, the EZ-VEST turns them into a vest: two posts, front and back, take any 2 in plates, and the Lite, Pro and Max versions are rated to 80, 150 and 300 lb. That makes it the only vest here that can match a dip belt for weighted dips, pull-ups and even squats, and it costs nothing per pound beyond the plates you have (our Olympic barbells guide covers plate choices). It is the wrong vest for walking or running: the plates ride on your chest and back like a backpack, and anything under 20 lb is better carried by a sand-filled vest.

7. MiR Air Flow Adjustable Weighted Vest: best 20-60 lb iron-bar vest

MiR’s Air Flow uses solid 3 lb iron bars in individual pockets instead of sand packets, so the weight never shifts or sags and you adjust in 3 lb steps. It is sold in 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 lb versions with mesh panels for airflow and a one-size hook-and-loop fit. It is the vest to pick over the RUNmax if you want the most even, bounce-free load for stair work and rucking, and the one to skip if you want a thin profile.

8. MiR Super Slim Air Flow: best light adjustable vest for walking

The Super Slim is MiR’s walking vest: a breathable mesh design with six removable weights, sold in 4-10, 11-20 and 20-32 lb versions. The 11-20 lb version covers the 5% to 10% rule for anyone from 110 to 200 lb, which makes it the adjustable alternative to the Empower and ZELUS for people who want to progress without buying twice. It fits one size with adjustable straps and is slim enough to wear on a walking pad under a desk.

How heavy should a weighted vest be? (the 5% to 10% math)

Trainers, orthopedic surgeons and the American Council on Exercise all land on the same rule: start at about 5% of your body weight and work up toward 10%, with 10% to 15% reserved for strong, experienced users doing short sessions or calisthenics. The arithmetic:

  • 130 lb body: 6.5 lb to start, 13 lb at 10%.
  • 150 lb body: 7.5 lb to start, 15 lb at 10%.
  • 170 lb body: 8.5 lb to start, 17 lb at 10%.
  • 200 lb body: 10 lb to start, 20 lb at 10%.
  • 250 lb body: 12.5 lb to start, 25 lb at 10%.

So “is 15 lb too heavy?” depends on the body: it is 10% of a 150 lb walker, which is the ceiling for a beginner, and 6% of a 250 lb one, which is a starting load. Add 2 to 3 lb every two to four weeks if your walks feel easy and your shoulders, knees and lower back feel fine the next day. For weighted pull-ups and dips, the vest is a barbell plate, not a cardio tool: 10 to 25 lb is a normal working load and the 5% rule does not apply. ACSM’s own measurements found a vest at 10% of body weight combined with a 5% to 10% treadmill incline raised calorie burn by about 13% over unweighted walking, which is the honest size of the effect: a vest makes a walk harder, it does not replace lifting.

How to choose a weighted vest

Adjustable beats fixed unless you are sure of your weight. Removable packets, bars or plates let you follow the 5% to 10% progression; a fixed 20 lb vest is either too heavy today or too light next year.

Small increments for walking and running, big ones for strength. Hyperwear’s 2.25 oz micro-weights and MiR’s 3 lb bars suit cardio; Kensui’s 2 in plates and the TacTec’s 5.75 and 8.75 lb plates suit pull-ups and dips.

Fit is the whole game. A vest that bounces chafes; a vest that hangs from the shoulders strains the neck. Sized vests with side cords (Hyperwear, 5.11) fit better than one-size vests; on a one-size vest, cinch the sides before adding weight.

Weight placement. Weight spread evenly front and back is kindest to the lower back. A vest loaded only on the front pulls you forward; a plate carrier with one plate does the same.

Fill material. Iron sand (RUNmax, ZELUS) is cheap and conforms to the body but can sag; steel and iron bars (Hyperwear, MiR) stay put; plates (Kensui, 5.11) are heaviest and cheapest per pound if you own them.

Where it fits in a home gym. A 20 to 40 lb vest replaces a dip belt for pull-ups on a pull-up bar or power tower, turns a walking pad session into a ruck, and is the cheapest line in a home gym under $1,000. Need the pad too? Our best walking pad under $200 guide ranks the budget options.

Frequently asked questions

How heavy should a weighted vest be?

Start at about 5% of your body weight and work up to 10%: 7.5 to 15 lb for a 150 lb person, 10 to 20 lb for a 200 lb person. Experienced users doing short rucks or calisthenics go to 10% to 15%. Buy an adjustable vest so you can add 2 to 3 lb every few weeks.

Is 15 lbs too heavy for a weighted vest?

Not for most adults: 15 lb is 10% of a 150 lb body and 7.5% of a 200 lb body, which is inside the usual 5% to 10% range. It is too heavy as a first vest for someone under about 130 lb, or for anyone with knee, hip or back pain; start at 5% and build up.

If I weigh 170 pounds, how heavy should my weighted vest be?

About 8.5 lb to start (5%) and up to 17 lb (10%) once walking at the lighter weight feels easy. A 20 lb adjustable vest covers the whole range.

What type of weighted vest is best for walking?

A light, fitted vest with the weight spread evenly front and back and no shoulder bulk: the Empower 8 lb, the MiR Super Slim Air Flow or, for longer walks and running, the Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO. A plate carrier is the least comfortable choice for walking because it carries all the weight in two slabs.

Are weighted vests good while walking?

Yes, within the 5% to 10% rule. A vest raises the effort and calorie burn of a walk (ACSM measured about 13% more with a vest at 10% of body weight on an incline) and loads the hips and spine in the way that supports bone density; a five-year Oregon State University program of weighted-vest plus jumping exercise prevented hip bone loss in older postmenopausal women. Check with your doctor first if you have osteoporosis, joint pain or a heart condition.

How many lbs should a weighted vest be for women?

The same 5% to 10% rule applies: 6.5 to 13 lb for a 130 lb woman, 7.5 to 15 lb at 150 lb. The 8 lb Empower vest or a 4-10 lb adjustable vest is the usual starting point; a women’s cut matters more than a women’s weight because a vest that sits on the chest rather than the shoulders is far more comfortable.

Is walking 30 minutes with a weighted vest good?

Yes. Thirty minutes at a brisk pace with a vest at 5% to 10% of body weight is harder than the same walk unweighted, on the order of 10% to 15% more energy, and it loads the bones of the hips and spine. Start with two or three vest walks a week, not every walk, and take it off if your lower back or shoulders ache the next day.

Can you run with a weighted vest?

Yes, with a thin, snug vest built for it (the Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO) at no more than about 5% to 10% of body weight, on short runs. Sand-filled and plate vests bounce, chafe and add impact to the knees; keep those for walking and strength work.

Bottom line: the RUNmax Pro for an adjustable vest that covers walks and weighted pull-ups, the Empower 8 lb or MiR Super Slim for walking, the Hyperwear Hyper Vest PRO if you run, the 5.11 TacTec with two plates for Murph, and the Kensui EZ-VEST if you already own Olympic plates and want to go heavy.
