How much does a pound of dumbbell cost in 2026? We compared the list prices of 36 adjustable and fixed dumbbell sets from 17 brand stores on October 22, 2026, divided each price by the total weight you get, and ranked them. The short answer: fixed dumbbell sets cost a median of $2.32 per pound, adjustable pairs a median of $4.96 per pound, and the cheapest listing in the study was $1.18 per pound. But price per pound alone points you to the wrong purchase for most home gyms, and the findings below show why.

Key findings
- Fixed sets win on metal, adjustables win on dumbbells replaced. A fixed set costs about half as much per pound of iron ($2.32 vs $4.96 median). But a 5 to 50 lb adjustable pair replaces 10 fixed pairs, or 550 lb. The Core Home Fitness pair at $379.99 is $0.69 per pound replaced, the BowFlex 552 at $479 is $0.87 and the REP QuickDraw 50 lb pair at $495.99 is $0.90. The cheapest 5 to 50 lb fixed set we found, PRx Performance at $1,049.99, costs about $670 more than the Core pair.
- The cheapest pound in the study was a sale. REP’s Rubber Coated 2.0 set (80 to 100 lb) was $1,063.99, marked down from $1,519.99, for $1.18 per pound. At its regular price it would be $1.69 per pound. 7 of the 36 listings showed a brand markdown on the day we checked.
- Heavier means cheaper per pound. REP Rubber Hex goes from $2.00 (5 to 50 lb) to $1.83 (80 to 100 lb). Ironmaster Quick-Lock goes from $5.54 (45 lb set) to $4.66 (75 lb set). NUOBELL goes from $7.00 (50 lb pair) to $5.49 (80 lb pair).
- Urethane costs about 45 percent more than rubber hex. REP’s urethane 5 to 50 lb set was $2.91 per pound against $2.00 for REP’s rubber hex 5 to 50 lb set.
- Spin-lock sets are the budget floor, with a ceiling. CAP’s 40 lb cast iron spin-lock set was $1.25 per pound, but that is only 20 lb per hand, and plates change by hand.
- Premium adjustables cost $6 to $7.56 per pound. The REP x PEPIN Fast Series, NUOBELL and PowerBlock Pro 100 EXP are paying for change speed and build, not for metal.

What this means for your home gym
If you train in a garage or spare room with limited floor space, an adjustable pair is the better value almost every time, because you are buying the range, not the iron. A dial pair in the $380 to $500 range covers 5 to 50 lb for well under half the cost of a fixed 5 to 50 lb set.
If you need heavy dumbbells above 80 lb or share the gym with others, fixed sets start to make sense: heavy sets are the cheapest per pound, two people can use different weights at once, and nothing has a mechanism to wear out.
If budget is everything, spin-lock plate sets cost the least per pound but cap out early. Our best adjustable dumbbells guide ranks the pairs worth buying, and the best dumbbell rack guide covers storage for a fixed set.
Methodology and sources
Date checked: October 22, 2026. Prices: the list price shown on each brand’s own online store that day, in US dollars, before tax and shipping, for an in-stock option. Where the brand showed a crossed-out price, we list it as “was” and use the live price. We did not use coupon codes, bundles with racks or benches, or third-party resellers. Weight: the maximum weight per dumbbell times two for adjustable pairs, and the sum of every pair for fixed sets (a 5 to 50 lb set in 5 lb steps is 550 lb). Spin-lock sets use the total weight in the listing title. Price per pound = price divided by total weight, rounded to the cent. Selection: popular adjustable models and complete fixed sets from US brand stores that publish their prices and weights; listings that did not state whether they were a single or a pair were left out. We compared listings and ranked them; we did not weigh or use the products.

Frequently asked questions
What is a good price per pound for dumbbells in 2026?
In our October 22, 2026 comparison, fixed dumbbell sets cost a median of $2.32 per pound and adjustable pairs a median of $4.96 per pound. Under $2 per pound is low for a full fixed set; under $4 per pound is low for a dial or pin adjustable pair.
Are adjustable dumbbells cheaper than a full dumbbell set?
Per pound of metal, no: adjustables cost about twice as much per pound. Per pound of dumbbells they replace, yes. A 5 to 50 lb adjustable pair replaces 10 fixed pairs (550 lb), so the Core Home Fitness pair at $379.99 works out to $0.69 per pound replaced, while the cheapest 5 to 50 lb fixed set in our data was $1,049.99.
Why do heavier dumbbell sets cost less per pound?
Handles, mechanisms and coating cost about the same on a light dumbbell and a heavy one, so the fixed cost is spread over more pounds. In our data the REP Rubber Hex set drops from $2.00 per pound (5 to 50 lb) to $1.83 (80 to 100 lb), and the Ironmaster Quick-Lock drops from $5.54 (45 lb set) to $4.66 (75 lb set).
Is urethane worth the extra cost over rubber hex dumbbells?
Urethane is more durable and smells less, but it costs more. REP’s urethane 5 to 50 lb set was $2.91 per pound against $2.00 for REP’s rubber hex 5 to 50 lb set, about 45 percent more. For most home gyms rubber hex is the better value.
How did you calculate price per pound?
We took the list price on each brand’s own store on October 22, 2026 and divided it by the total weight included: both dumbbells of a pair at their maximum setting, or the sum of every pair in a fixed set. Tax, shipping and racks are not included. The full data is a free CSV download on this page.
